How to make it feel like a library

Isn't this fun?!  It's the back door to Cover Treasures, our local bookstore.  They actually used a wrapping paper that the owner found years ago cutting around the books and gluing them in the recessed panels of the door.

I love that the bookstore set the paper in the recesses of the panels of the door making it look like the books are tucked into small cubbies. 

• You can get a similar effect by buying a door at The Restore.  I paid about $35 each for some I bought to use as worktables.  Secure it to the wall and paint according to the decor of the room.  Now, add the books wallpaper.  For a small room that would be overwhelmed by real bookcases you could put up a pair of doors, one on each side of a loveseat.  If you want to add a bit of depth frame out the outside edges of the doors with 1 x 4's glued at 90 degrees to the doors so they sit out from the wall when hung.

• If you put the wallpaper up on a wall as a border or a large panel add some trim pieces of wood below the books to make it look like they are actually sitting on shelves.  

• If you put the paper on the back wall of a bookcase you can give it a real 3-D effect by placing accessories and small pieces of art or photos on the shelves in front of the books paper.  

• Think about cutting out some of the books and putting them up laying horizontally on their sides at the end of a run of books set upright.  Download a picture of a small pot with greenery, cut it out and "set" it on top of the horizontal books.  

• One thing I'd be very careful with is wallpapering an entire wall with faux books.  A little bit of theme wallpaper goes a long way.  You want this treatment to be a fun little gift to those who enter the room.  Too much will lose that effect.
