Do you have so many family photos that you don't know how to display them? One idea is to create a family tree with the photos. I just did this for a client and we had a great time deciding which picture showed the true spirit of each family member. They are all coming for the 4th of July holiday and it will be fun to hear about the reactions to the wall.
We started with her and her husband's high school photos, added the wedding photos above with her parents and grandparents to the left and his to the right. Below their photos we added the high school photos of their children with some candid shots gathered near each of their photos to show more of their personalities and to prompt the story telling that always comes with fun photos! The bottom row is where the grandchildren joined the collage with plenty of room to add more as they grow up.
The trick to making it easy to "read" is to use photos of similar size and frame styles. If you have too many sizes and finishes your brain gets lost in trying to balance the shapes and finishes and misses the faces of the people. The space between photos should be about 1 1/2" to 2" for 5 x 7 or 8 x 10s. Use the old trick of laying out the pictures on the floor in front of the wall you intend to use. If, after you have it all laid out, you find that you keep looking at the space between the pictures instead of at the pictures or that one image is demanding more attention than the others, shift things around until you can stand back and go "ahhh". Your eye should spend equal time with each member of your family - no favorites!
